1:1 Technology FAQs

What are my family’s options for my High School student in the 1:1 device program?
Families have three options in terms of devices:
•  Option 1:  Students receive a device from SHPS, pay the insurance fee  of $25 and can take the device home with  charger.
•  Option 2:  Students bring their own device OR purchase a Chromebook for $193.98 from SHPS.  Devices purchased from SHPS come with the Chrome operating system, and a 1-year manufacturer mail-in warranty service through Dell.
•  Option 3:  Students may choose to use a SHPS-provided Chromebook and not take the device home.  They will check their device in and out of the Integrated Learning Center everyday.  There is no insurance fee for this option.

What is the difference between using a personal device at school vs. using a district-provided Chromebook with or without insurance?
Devices from home are more than welcome at SHHS so long as they meet the SHHS Minimum Requirements for BYOD Devices.  Devices must be brought to school everyday, charged and prepared for class.  There is no cost or fee to use a district-provided Chromebook through SHHS, however, if you would like to enable your student to take the device home the district requires you to purchase district-provided insurance to do so.

What does the insurance cost and what does it cover?
The insurance is $25 per student for families who qualify for free & reduced lunch, $50 per student for all other families.  Families who pay $50 will be reimbursed $25 at the end of the year if the insurance was not used. SHHS-provided insurance will cover up to the replacement cost of the device for most non-intentional loss or damage to the student's insured device. See our insurance policy for specific details.  Insurance is only available to be purchased from SHHS for district-owned devices.

What kind of Chromebooks will be available through SHHS?
Students with a SHHS device will be using a Dell 11-inch durable Chromebook.
Dell Chromebook 11 3120,Intel N2840 processor, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB eMMC SSD, 11.6" 1366 x 768 Display, Highly Durable: Mil-STD 810G passed for pressure, temperature, shock and vibration. Will families be required to have internet at home?

No.  The District does not and will not require families to have internet at home.

Which schools are getting these devices?
All students at SHPS 1st through 12th grade have access to individual instructional technology either in their core classes or directly assigned to each student. South Haven High School is very excited to be able to offer students the option to take Chromebooks home this year.

When can families pick up Chromebooks and purchase insurance?

Students and parents can stop into Listiak Auditorium the week of August 22-26 from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM to purchase insurance or devices.  Devices will be available for assignment or purchase and can be taken home at time of payment.

How long will devices be available for sale?
SHHS has 150 Chromebooks available for sale and will sell devices on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Can anyone buy a Chromebook or can I buy a Chromebook for my student in another building?
Chromebooks are only available for sale to students at SHHS at this time. The district only has enough devices to ensure all students have access to one.  Depending on interest, the district may offer the option for other students to prepay and order a Chromebook though the district in September.  Please let us know if you are interested by filling out the SHPS Chromebook Purchase Request form.
